Crime Solvers of Fairfax County is built on a belief as old as modern policing itself: that safe communities are not the sole responsibility of law enforcement. They are the shared responsibility of every citizen.
Nearly 200 years ago, Sir Robert Peel, architect of modern policing, wrote that “the police are the public and the public are the police.” That principle lives at the heart of everything we do.
The mission of Crime Solvers of Fairfax County is to prevent and solve crime by obtaining tips from community members who wish to remain anonymous, offering rewards for information that helps investigators, and advancing public education and advocacy for safer communities. Working in partnership with the Fairfax County Police Department, the media, businesses, and residents, Crime Solvers of Fairfax County empowers the community to play an active role in protecting Fairfax County and the greater DMV.
The Principle That Guides Us
When Sir Robert Peel passed the Metropolitan Police Act in 1829, he established nine principles for how police should serve the public. His vision was radical: policing works not through force, but through trust, cooperation, and the voluntary participation of an informed community.
Nearly two centuries later, those principles remain the cornerstone of effective public safety. Among the most enduring:
“The basic mission for which the police exist is to prevent crime and disorder.”
“Police, at all times, should maintain a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and the public are the police.”
“The test of police efficiency is the absence of crime and disorder, not the visible evidence of police action in dealing with it.”
Crime Solvers of Fairfax County was founded in that spirit and operates in it every day.
Who We Are
Crime Solvers of Fairfax County (formerly Fairfax County Crime Solvers) is a community-oriented nonprofit organization uniting citizens, the business community, the news media, and the Fairfax County Police Department in the shared mission of preventing and solving crime. We have proudly served the Fairfax County community since October 1979, making us the oldest Crime Solvers program in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
We are a volunteer-led, community-funded organization. Our program is operated by a civilian Board of Directors and is neither funded nor run by the police department. The funds to operate our program come entirely from community donations and fundraising events.
Our Focus Areas
Crime Solvers of Fairfax County works to support law enforcement across the full spectrum of serious crime. While every tip matters, our program places particular emphasis on the most serious offenses affecting our community:
- Homicide
- Sexual assault and rape
- Robbery and carjacking
- Aggravated assault
- Organized crime and trafficking
Our Partnership with the Fairfax County Police Department
Crime Solvers of Fairfax County works in close collaboration with the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD), while remaining a fully independent organization. This balance matters. We operate with financial and jurisdictional independence, while sharing a unified commitment to public safety.
We are proud to have FCPD representatives, including Deputy Chiefs and Captains of Police, serving as ex officio members of our Board of Directors.
Crime Solvers organizes fundraising and philanthropic initiatives to generate reward funds for tipsters whose information helps solve crimes. Through the FCPD’s Real-Time Crime Center, submitted tips are reviewed, investigated, and resolved. Together, Crime Solvers and the FCPD ensure eligible tipsters receive reward payments while preserving the confidentiality and anonymity that makes our program work.

Our Board's Commitment to Growth
In 2025, through the grant of an anonymous donor and the Andrew Kuremsky Charitable Fund, the board underwent a day-long training on board governance and responsibilities. In 2026, the board will mount a strategic planning initiative to develop additional programming to prevent and solve crime in all aspects of our lives – from the classrooms to our communities and with the elderly.
